Mosquitoes are present in Arizona anytime the temperatures rise above 50 degrees, and are especially active when temps are in the 80’s and above. There are some things you can do to make your yard less inviting to these annoying insects, both before and after they hatch.
Eliminate Mosquito Breeding Grounds.
We’ve all heard that standing water is a magnet for mosquitoes, and you’ve scanned the yard to remove any obvious culprits. But some areas where mosquitoes can breed are easily missed. Some examples include:
- Kids toys left out that may collect water, such as ride-on toys and water tables
- Empty flower pots or other gardening equipment
- Birdbaths and pet water bowls
- Uneven areas of landscaping where water may puddle
- Vehicle covers or tarps where water can pool
- Unkept rain gutters and drains that may be filled with leaves and debris
Water Sources You Want to Keep.
What about the bodies of water we can’t- or don’t want to- eliminate? There are many types of water sources that we have in our yards which make the environment more enjoyable for us. Below are some types and how to maintain them to reduce mosquitoes.
- Keep swimming pools clean and chlorinated year round
- Aerate garden ponds to keep the water moving
- Stock ponds with fish that eat mosquito larvae
- Avoid planting aquatic plants in tight groups
- Use products that contain a bacteria called Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (B.t.i.) commonly used to control mosquito larvae in standing water. This bacteria kills mosquito larvae but is safe for fish and other animals.
Reduce Mosquito Resting Places.
Now that we’ve made it more difficult for mosquitoes to breed, let’s look at ways to make it less comfortable for them to relax. Mosquitoes need shade and shelter to get out of the mid-day heat and sun. Reducing the number of shady places for them to rest will help keep them out of your yard.
- Trim hedges and bushes regularly
- Mow grass at least every other week
- Cut or remove weeds often
- Talk to your neighbors about keeping their properties maintained
Adjust Your Outdoor Living Spaces.
Some helpful changes are simple things you can do around your patio area that discourage any mosquitoes that are present from invading your space.
- Use fans at ground level. The breeze will make it difficult for mosquitoes to fly and will also help throw them off your scent.
- Switch to yellow colored “bug bulbs”. These are light bulbs that are less attractive to bugs and as an added benefit, help protect pollinators by reducing light pollution.
Make Yourself Less Attractive.
Of course, we don’t mean that how it sounded. We mean, make yourself less attractive to mosquitoes. There are several easy ways to do that, without compromising your looks.
- Wear light-colored clothing. Mosquitoes are attracted to darker colors.
- Avoid scented personal products if you plan to spend time outdoors. This includes lotions, body washes, and cologne or perfume.
- Use a plant-based repellent if necessary. (Use as directed)
